Hope everyone is having a good week! We are all starting new units this week. Periods 1 and 3 are working with integers. Today, we started designing our own integer picture to visualize integers in the real world. Periods 2 and 9 are moving on to dividing decimals. Periods 7 and 8 are starting the fraction unit. For Veteran's Day, we will be making a bar graph representing the number of veterans in each of the armed forces. Students were given a graph to complete and then they will glue American flags on a bar graph. This bar graph will show all the veteran's of the 6th grade team. It is always impressive to see it come together! The bar graphs are due Friday, 10/30/15. Thank you to the students who are giving the date as a math problem. We are learning math concepts along the way when trying to solve it to match the day's date. Have a great Halloween weekend! Mrs. Biarnesen

Did you know civil engineers have to know how to multiply a decimal by a whole number? Did you know structural engineers divide whole numbers by fractions when building tunnels? This week periods 2, 7, 8, and 9 are beginning the unit on multiplying decimals. Periods 1 and 3 are working on fraction multiplication. Today, conference letters are going home. Did your child show you theirs? Also, specials will go through Friday, 10/23 and new rotations will start on Monday, 10/26. Have a super weekend! Cheering on the Big Hollow Warriors soccer team! October 8, 2015 Why do we have to know what the greatest common factor and least common multiple are? What real life situations use them? We did a Fruit Basket Challenge for greatest common factor and a math carousel activity for least common multiple. These were real life situations. We are not only learning the basic math concepts but applying them with critical thinking as well! We completed our unit on dividing multi-digit numbers and are now learning to master decimal operations. What questions can you ask your child: What does line up the dot, give it all you got mean?, What are placeholders and when do we use them?, What does annexing zeroes mean and when do we annex zeroes?, How can decimal grids be used to add and multiply decimals?, What is the division house?, What does Does McDonalds Sell Burgers mean for division? This year students are putting together an Interactive Student Notebook. It is a good reference tool for what we are learning in math. It also promotes student engagement, responsibility and organization. Have you seen your child’s? Earlier this year we completed a learning styles survey and multiple intelligences survey. They are part of the ISN. What are your learning styles and multiple intelligences? Homework papers are passed back weekly. Does your child show you these? Also, students who are absent are still responsible for completing the homework. Where can they find out what the homework is and get copies of any handouts? In the Absent Binder. Have you checked out my teacher website? Homework, student blogs and teacher blogs are posted here. What questions do you have? Please email me or call me. Thanks! Here are a few: How does the least common multiple involve music?, What does cross-simplify mean and why is it helpful to use?, and How can the greatest common factor be used when making identical fruit baskets with no fruit left over (The Fruit Basket Challenge)? For our decimal unit, students completed real life decimal problems from the Candy Corner activity. We keep progressing very well in learning the math concepts! Periods 2, 7, 8,and 9 have finished the unit on dividing multi-digit numbers and is now working with decimal operations. Periods 1 and 3 finished the unit on greatest common factor and least common multiple and are now working with fraction operations. Congratulations to the following students who have won the PAWS drawings (Positive Attitude brings Warrior Success): David L, Paige A., Adryan G., Michelle L., Vanessa D., Chance C., Brayden B., Grace B., Kylie K., Joesph M., Sara S., Becca P., Carolina H., and Melanie V. What are the PAWS cards? Students receive them for good behavior in class! One of the reward choices is having lunch with a teacher and a friend. It was real nice having lunch with David L., Adryan G., Sara S., Ally N., Angelina D., and Michelle L. Have a great weekend! Mrs. Biarnesen |
