6th Grade Math News (Periods 7 and 8)

Models, Models, Models! Wow, how do these apply to math? They are the use of bar diagrams that help solve math problems. Rather than just learn the math steps we are also learning with bar models. It is great to see some students choose the bar models to work on their math problems. The bar models are a good visual and show why the math steps work. Because we are all different learners it helps to have more than one strategy to solve math problems. We are finishing up our fraction unit with division. This week we have been using bar models, next we will learn the math computation strategy. Here are good videos on dividing fractions using bar models: https://www.schooltube.com/video/a3b3f9ed26d1447dbc9f/Common%20Core%206th%20Grade%20Lesson%20Videos%20-%20Dividing%20fractions%20using%20models%20and%20common%20denominators

After our fraction unit, we will be working on ratios and proportions. Did you know number lines can help solve ratio problems? Homework papers are passed back weekly. Does your child show you these? Also, students who are absent are still responsible for completing the homework. Where can they find out what the homework is and get copies of any handouts? In the Absent Binder. Have you checked out my teacher website? Homework, student blogs and teacher blogs are posted here. What questions do you have? Please email me or call me. Thanks!

Try doing this math problem with your child!
With the digits 1, 2, 3, and 4, how many four-digit numbers can be formed if no digits can be repeated?
What is the probability that a number is odd? Is divisible by three? Is greater than 400?
