6th Grade Math News (Periods 1 and 3)

What kinds of numbers are used by the football sports announcers, football referees, in the stock market, and by the weather forecasters? Integers! We not only learned what integers are but also learned how to add, subtract, multiply and divide integers. What are the rules for multiplying and dividing and what does keep, change, change mean? Ask your child! After integers, we expanded our number horizon with rational numbers. Do you know what they are? To help students understand rational numbers we created number lines. We also learned how to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers. We are currently working with expressions and equations. Do you know the parts to an expression? Did you know an expression does not have an equal sign? What math clue words are there for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division? Check your child’s ISN to find out. Next, we will be solving one-step and two-step equations. Homework papers are passed back weekly. Does your child show you these? Also, students who are absent are still responsible for completing the homework. Where can they find out what the homework is and get copies of any handouts? In the Absent Binder. What questions do you have? Please email me or call me. Thanks!

Try doing this math problem with your child!
Zoe, Claire, and Kristin have to cross a river to visit their friend Tasha. They have a boat, but they also have a problem. Zoe and Claire each weigh 50 pounds, Kristin weighs 75 pounds, and the boat will carry only 100 pounds at a time. “Oh no! We can’t all get across the river!” moans Claire.
Kristin thinks for a moment and says, “I know a way we can all get across. It will just take more than one trip.”
What is Kristin’s plan?
